Becoming a Barber: a profession or a gift of time

22.01.2019

Who is a Barber, how does he differ from a hairdresser and why has this profession become so fashionable and in demand recently?  Given the number of men’s beauty salons that have opened in Ukraine and Kyiv in particular Over the past few years, the profession of a barber has become very relevant and in demand.

Remember the time when everyone wanted to become a DJ or a photographer?  They say that the Barbers have now taken their place.  Why is there such a boom and excitement around this direction and what will happen next?

In Ukraine, barbershops began to appear in 2013 and to this day the culture of this direction is actively developing.  Because of this need, many schools and educational areas in Berber art arose, there was a great demand for private education that could not be provided by state educational institutions.

We, in turn, launched Barber Academy’, where to this day anyone who wants to can learn this craft from scratch, or take additional advanced training courses.  Our Academy is supervised by Rostislav Ostroluckij – a barber who stood at the origins of this profession in Ukraine, studied in England and has many international certificates, and most importantly, invaluable many years of experience.

Barber is primarily a men’s hairdresser, or as they used to say – a barber’.  Historically, this is a male profession, and girls are not allowed in this area.

What services should every Barber be able to do?  Of course, the basic set includes proper head washing, hair styling, hair cutting, beard cutting, royal shave or shaving with a dangerous razor, head shaving, facial skin steaming, mustache cutting, haircut correction, selection of a haircut and beard according to the shape of the client’s face, gray hair camouflage.   Masters with additional hair coloring and dyeing skills are also valued, as this service has been popular recently.

What qualities should a Barber possess?  First of all, it is a sense of style, an understanding of fashion trends and the wishes of the client.  It is not enough to know all haircuts by heart or understand all types of beard haircuts (and there are more than forty of them for a minute).  Considering the specifics, Barber is not only a master, but also a psychologist, a friend and a good conversationalist.  It is not an easy job, even physically, because the craftsman has to spend the whole day “on his feet”, but work with his hands and head using all his imagination and dexterity.

Is age and work experience important?  You can become a Barber at any age, now a 13-year-old boy is quickly proving it , who already holds his master classes and has his own style of haircuts.  Nevertheless, experience and the desire to develop, grow and learn every day are important.  After all, only the number of served customers, testing various techniques and practice will be the best training and will replace hundreds of views on Instagram.

A large part of customers come to the barbershop precisely for the atmosphere and communication, the opportunity to feel like a member of a closed men’s club , in which there is no place to talk about curlers and dresses.  And this is a great merit of the whole team.

Therefore, an important part of the work is to create such an atmosphere that the client wants to come back again and again.  At “TsirulniKBarbershope” every man can treat himself to free alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, spend time playing Sony Playstation or reading the latest press.

Of course, such a place of work is conducive to a special mood and development of the master within the walls of the barbershop.
