Barbers Pole: the history of its appearance and what it means

Since ancient times, barbers have performed the functions of both doctors and hairdressers. In addition to haircuts, they performed operations: removed teeth, boils, and performed bloodletting. For advertising, they used containers filled with the blood of their patients and displayed them, thereby showing the level of their skill. But over time, the sight and unpleasant smell of rotting blood began to annoy the townspeople and, over time, thanks to the demands of the townspeople, such propaganda was prohibited by law. This is how the now-famous symbol appeared – Barber’s Pole, which can also be seen in our barbershop network.

Barbers Pole – centuries-old history

1930s – hairdressing and medical services were separated. Places where only doctors worked were marked with a red pole, and hairdressers with a blue one alternating with white stripes. But, as before, there remained places where virtuosos worked, providing all kinds of services. Such institutions used a tricolor in which:

• red color denoted blood;
• blue – veins;
• white – sterile bandages.

There is another legend that red stripes indicate bandages contaminated with blood, and white ones symbolize fresh bandages. As you know, after washing, they were dried on the fence, and the wind twisted them and wound them around the pole on which they were fixed. As a result, a spiral came out.

Today, two popular versions of Barber pole are known: the red and white symbol, common in Europe, and the three-color – popular in America, it is also associated with the state flag.

Barber paul today – what is it

Barber’s Pole is a symbol, the personification of a place where real magical, masculine atmosphere and where the history, culture and laws of the barber as a whole are respected.

Today, the emblem of the modern barber is the spiral stripes of three glowing colors. The constant movement of the stripes creates the effect of infinity, and the burning lantern above announces that the barbershop is open and always happy to see new visitors. In many cities of Ukraine, near barbershops, you can find such a sign.

Untrustworthy people think , that in such places you will get a haircut no better than in a regular barbershop.
