Men’s combs – how to choose the right comb

18.07.2022

When choosing a comb, it is very important to consider its material, structure and type of teeth. In this article, the specialists of the men’s hairdressers chain TsirulniKBarbershop will tell you how to choose the right comb for men’s hair. Recommendations are compiled based on many years of experience of our men’s hairdressers, who use combs every day in their work.

Hair types and structure, such as determine?

When you are faced with choosing a comb, you need to consider the texture and type of hair. Hair has two main components – the bulb or hair follicle and the hair shaft. Now you will be shocked to hear that the size of the hair follicles gives the personal length of the hair.

  1. Wavy hair does not curl and is styled S-shaped. Volume haircuts and classics are suitable for such hair.
  2. Straight thick hair. The main disadvantage is the long drying time after washing, but the advantages are in almost any styling.
  3. Straight thin hair is prone to greasiness, its texture is light and fragile. It is more difficult to style them in volume than thick straight hair. Be careful if you overdo it with styling products – you can get dirty hair as a result.
  4. Curly (large) hair has a clear S-shaped shape, long sections of strands form a large curl and such problems with styling do not occur. However, not all haircuts and styling are suitable for this hair texture.
  5. Curly ( fine) hair is more often observed in Africans, and the hair grows in a zigzag pattern, which does not allow the curls to stand out. If wavy hair or large curls near the roots are straight, then the curl is formed almost at the hair follicles. As a result, the hair looks like a “cap” due to the average length of the hair.

Forms of comb

Types of combs

  1. A comb with evenly distributed and wide teeth combs thin and wet hair, gently detangling strands. Such combs are preferred by all barbers.
  2. A mixed type of combs – one part consists of large teeth, and the other – from small and medium ones. They contribute to detangling the hair, help it to lay the exciting roots of the hair correctly. Best suited for short hair on wavy, straight, thin or thick types, but not for curly hair.
  3. A thin comb with a comfortable handle, for good combing of long hair.
  4. A compound comb consists of small teeth that are very close to each other. It is convenient because it can be carried in a pocket and such combs are recommended for those who have thin and straight hair.

Types of brushes

  1. Square combs comb hair with massaging movements, smoothing straight and long hair, making it shiny.
  2. Oval combs are used directly for their purpose, giving massage movements on the scalp. They are suitable for any type of hair except small curls.
  3. Round combs or brushings, as a rule, do not untangle the hair, but help to lay the hair well with basal volume.
  4. Skeletal combs are used with a hair dryer for styling, a through hole in which blows away excess moisture.
  5. A sponge brush is considered the best option for small curls.

Types of materials

  1. Wood combs are considered gentle because they are suitable for those with allergic reactions, in whose hair is electrified. The wooden teeth themselves promote good blood flow to the head, which plays a preventive role in the development of alopecia. The disadvantage of this material is that the comb is not durable, so in barbershops and hairdressers do not apply.
  2. Metal combs are very aggressive on the scalp and hair roots. 100% processing of teeth will not save the situation in any case. After some time, nozzles were placed on the serrations of the metal combs to reduce trauma.
  3. Plastic combs are not as aggressive as the previous ones, but they can accumulate electricity. Hair begins to fluff up and become unruly. The savior in this situation is soft touch – this is a special coating that resembles rubber in consistency.
  4. Combs made of natural ingredients have a neutralizing effect on static and gently detangle hair. It is worth noting that this type of comb is not suitable for small curls of a rigid type, because the comb simply will not be able to cope with such hair. Also, such a comb is not suitable for hair prone to greasiness due to the fact that the comb will breed all sorts of microorganisms. An alternative would be a synthetic brush comb.
